Recently, a photo of a man with a neo-Nazi tattoo on his head was published on blogs and social media accounts, claiming that he was the deputy director of the Kiev police . However, this claim is false, say ellinika hoaxes.

What applies

The photos in question show Artyom "Bonov" Zalesov (Артем "Бонов" Залесов), a far-right Ukrainian who maintains his own YouTube channel and has participated in productions of the Kino Films Chervonograd studio.

The confusion has to do with audiovisual material showing A. Bonov and other far- rightists at the offices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and found on the Internet since 2014. According to available information, the photos are linked to a Russian social media account VK, who is said to have belonged to A. Bonov.

In a post made by a user on VK on December 9, 2014, he states that the presentation of A. Bonov as Deputy Chief of the Kiev Police was the occasion for a series of satirical posts on Twitter. The impetus for these satirical publications was the posting of A. Bonov in conjunction with the appointment of Vadim Troyan, one of the leaders of the Azov Battalion, to the Police Directorate of the Kiev region.

The aforementioned satirical posts used photos of various extreme right-wingers and assigned them the post of new Deputy Chief of Staff at the Kiev Police Department.

The photos linking extreme right-wingers with the Ukrainian police

The account attributed to A. Bonov, to which the material was posted by the offices of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, has now been downloaded, but details of it have been saved in the online file WayBack Machine.

The snapshots in question appear to have been posted on November 19, 2014. This is a video with A. Bonov and a photo of a group of men (A. Bonov in the center) saluting Nazis in a Ministry room.

The photo, which shows A. Bonov wearing a uniform, and which is used as evidence to support the claim that he is a police officer, was found to be shared in December 2014 on an online forum.

The insignia on the arm of A. Bonov refer to those worn by the units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. These insignia were worn by those who worked in the Police of Ukraine (Міліція України) until 2015, when it was under the control of the Ministry of Interior.

In July 2015, the National Police of Ukraine (Національна поліція України) was established, which is now directed and coordinated by the Council of Ministers of the country. It should be noted that since then the insignia on the police uniform have also changed.

Response from the Ukrainian authorities

The publication of the photos from the Ministry's premises and the uproar caused in 2014 resulted in the public attitude of the Ukrainian authorities on the issue. An article posted on korrespondent.net on December 1, 2014, states that the Central Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in the Kiev region has denied allegations that the far right is working for the police:

None of those depicted in the video are currently in the internal affairs bodies of Ukraine.

They also claim that the photo with the Nazi salute was taken in the assembly room held by the head of the Kiev region police during the summer, when on the fourth floor of the building were volunteers who wanted to join the Azov Volunteer Battalion.

In a Facebook post, the then adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko (Антон Геращенко), also claimed that the photo and video were shot in July at the meeting place. He also stressed that none of those depicted ended up in the Azov Order and were not recruited into the Interior Ministry and the police. In his statements, A. Gerashchenko acknowledged that among the residents of Azov who took part in the demonstrations in Maidan Square and other streets of the city, there were some with far-right views.

The fact that A. Bonov was a member of the Azov Volunteer Battalion in the summer of 2014 is confirmed by his posts on the various accounts he had from time to time in VK, but also by other sources. No evidence was found linking A. Bonov to the Azov Battalion when it joined the National Guard.

Conclusion

According to the available information, the allegation that A. Bonov held the position of Deputy Director of the Kiev Police is not confirmed, ellinika hoaxes reports. Also, no data was found to indicate that he took another position in the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior. In the summer of 2014 he was a member of the Azov Volunteer Battalion for a short time, before joining the National Guard of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian authorities and their members, in their public statements, stated that none of those depicted in the photo and video taken at the assembly site had received a public office until December 2014.
